Backup Generators And Automatic Transfer Switches: Real Power Resilience For Your Koh Samui Villa

A family in Bophut lost power for eleven hours during a November storm two years ago. Nothing dramatic happened to the villa itself, just downed lines somewhere between them and the substation. But the fridge and freezer both turned over, the pool pump sat idle long enough that they were fighting algae for a week after, and the wifi router that ran their home office setup stayed dark the whole time they needed it most. They called us afterwards asking what a generator would have cost to install during the original build. The honest answer: a fraction of what it costs to retrofit now that the walls, wiring and switchboard are already finished.

That’s the pattern we see. People plan for solar, they plan for pretty finishes, and almost nobody plans for the ten-to-twenty-hour outage that happens once or twice a year during monsoon season. It’s not a daily problem, which is exactly why it gets skipped. But it’s also one of the cheapest things to build in properly and one of the most expensive things to bolt on later.

Why Koh Samui Villas Need An Actual Plan For This

Grid power on Samui is generally reliable day to day, but the island’s supply runs through a mix of undersea cable and local distribution that isn’t immune to storm damage, and outages cluster around the wetter months from roughly October through December. Most are short. Some aren’t. If you’re relying purely on grid power with no backup, a bad storm season can mean a spoiled freezer, a struggling pool, and no air conditioning at exactly the point in the year when the humidity makes that hardest to live without.

Solar helps with your electricity bill, but a standard grid-tied solar system shuts itself off during an outage for safety reasons, same as the grid it’s tied to. Solar alone doesn’t solve this problem unless you’ve paid for a battery-backed hybrid system, and even then batteries have limits on how long they’ll carry a full house through an extended cut. A generator, properly wired in, is still the most cost-effective way to guarantee power when the grid genuinely fails.

Sizing The Generator To What Actually Matters

You don’t need to run the entire villa off a generator, and trying to is how people end up buying something oversized and expensive. What you actually want is a system that covers your essential loads: refrigeration, a reasonable number of lights and outlets, the pool circulation pump, internet and router, and at least one or two AC units, typically in bedrooms so people can sleep.

For a mid-size villa, that essential-loads list usually lands in the 8 to 15 kVA range, and we’ve specified units up to 20 kVA where a client wanted the whole house, including the kitchen and most of the AC, covered without exception. Running the full house rather than a curated circuit list roughly doubles the generator cost and the fuel burn for backup capacity that mostly sits unused. Decide what actually needs to stay on before you decide on a unit size, not after.

Where The Automatic Transfer Switch Comes In

An automatic transfer switch, or ATS, is the piece that makes a backup generator actually useful rather than theoretical. Without one, someone has to physically run out during a storm, start the generator, and manually switch circuits over, which is exactly the scenario nobody wants to be doing at midnight in the rain. An ATS senses the moment grid power drops, starts the generator automatically if it’s not already running, and switches the pre-selected circuits over within seconds. When the grid comes back, it switches back and shuts the generator down on its own.

This isn’t exotic equipment. It’s a well-understood, low-difficulty piece of electrical infrastructure, and the cost of installing one properly during construction, when the switchboard and circuit runs are still being decided, is a small fraction of what it costs to have an electrician retrofit a finished home. Circuits that need backup power have to be identified and separated out at the switchboard stage. Do this after the plaster’s up and you’re paying to open walls that didn’t need to be opened.

What Needs To Happen During The Build, Not After

If you want this done properly, a few things need deciding before construction gets past the early electrical planning stage. First, a level, ventilated pad or enclosure for the generator itself, sited far enough from bedrooms and outdoor living areas that the noise and exhaust aren’t a daily nuisance, but close enough to the switchboard that cable runs stay sensible. Second, the switchboard needs to be designed from day one with a clear split between backed-up circuits and everything else, rather than trying to separate them out of an existing board later. Third, fuel storage, whether that’s diesel or LPG, needs a safe, accessible, code-compliant location worked out at the same stage as the rest of the site services.

This is exactly the kind of decision that belongs in the same conversation as your villa construction planning, alongside solar and general electrical design, not as an afterthought once the build is finished. What This Actually Costs

A properly sized generator with an ATS, pad, fuel storage and correctly split switchboard typically adds somewhere between 150,000 and 400,000 baht to a mid-range villa build, depending on the generator’s capacity and how many circuits you want backed up. That’s real money, but it’s a fraction of a retrofit, and it’s a fraction of what a ruined freezer, a green pool and a week without air conditioning costs you in aggravation alone.

Plan It Once, Forget About It After

Backup power is one of those things nobody thinks about until the lights go out, and by then it’s too late to do anything about it cheaply.
